Silicon is added to iron, primarily in steel production, to significantly enhance specific properties: improving magnetic characteristics by reducing hysteresis and eddy current losses for electrical applications, increasing electrical resistivity, strengthening the metal matrix through solid solution hardening, and enhancing oxidation resistance at high temperatures by forming a protective SiO₂ surface layer.
